Big Bass Bonanza Slot Review

Game Overview

Big Bass Bonanza is a fishing-themed 5×3 slot with 10 paylines from Pragmatic Play that launched an entire franchise of sequels. The game's unique mechanic revolves around the Fisherman Wild in the free spins round — when the fisherman lands, he "catches" all money symbols on screen, collecting their values. This creates a dynamic, interactive bonus round that keeps players engaged spin after spin.

Set on a tranquil lake at sunset, the game features fishing tackle, lures, bobbers, and bass as symbols. The art style is cartoonish and accessible, with smooth animations that bring the fishing theme to life. When the fisherman symbol appears during free spins, he casts his line across the screen in a satisfying animation, reeling in all visible money fish for their combined value.

The game's popularity among South African players at platforms like Hollywoodbets and Betway has been immense, making it one of the most-played Pragmatic Play titles in the SA market. Its straightforward mechanics and above-average RTP of 96.71% make it accessible to newcomers while offering enough depth to satisfy experienced slot enthusiasts.

The Fisherman Collect Mechanic

The money collect mechanic is what sets Big Bass Bonanza apart from standard slots. During the free spins bonus, fish symbols appear on the reels carrying random cash values ranging from 2x to 50x your bet. These fish symbols remain static on the grid until the Fisherman Wild lands on the reels. When he appears, he collects every visible fish's cash value in a single scoop — the more fish on screen, the bigger the payout.

What makes this mechanic particularly exciting is the build-up tension. As fish accumulate on the reels across multiple free spins, the potential payout grows with each spin. You're essentially watching the prize pool build in real-time, waiting for the fisherman to appear and cash everything in. This mechanic has proven so popular that Pragmatic Play has since released Big Bass Splash, Bigger Bass Bonanza, and Big Bass Keeping it Reel — all expanding on this core concept.

Free Spins & Bonus Round

Landing 3 or more scatter symbols (the fishing reel) triggers the free spins round: 3 scatters award 10 free spins, 4 scatters give 15, and 5 scatters deliver 20 free spins. During the bonus, the money fish symbols and fisherman wilds become active, transforming the gameplay entirely from the base game experience.

The free spins round can be retriggered by landing additional scatters. Each retrigger adds another batch of free spins to your total, extending the bonus and increasing your opportunities to land fisherman-fish combinations. The high volatility means that many free spin rounds may yield modest returns, but when the fisherman appears with a grid full of high-value fish, the payouts can reach the 2,100x maximum win cap.

Final Verdict

Big Bass Bonanza earns its reputation as one of Pragmatic Play's signature titles. The money collect mechanic creates genuine excitement during the bonus round, and the above-average RTP ensures fair long-term value. While the base game is admittedly simple, the free spins potential and franchise expansion options make this a slot that SA players keep coming back to. We rate it 4.3/5 — a must-try for any slot enthusiast.
