How to Play Poker
Master the world's most popular card game with our complete guide for South African players.
Texas Hold'em Basics
Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker variant worldwide and in South Africa. Each player receives two hole cards, and five community cards are dealt face-up on the board. The goal is to make the best five-card hand using any combination of your hole cards and community cards.
The game flows through four betting rounds: pre-flop (after receiving hole cards), flop (first three community cards), turn (fourth card), and river (fifth card). Players can bet, raise, call, or fold at each stage.

Casino Poker vs Player Poker
In casino poker (Caribbean Stud, Three Card Poker, Casino Hold'em), you play against the house with fixed odds. In player poker (Texas Hold'em, Omaha), you compete against other players and the casino takes a small rake. Casino poker is simpler but offers worse long-term odds for skilled players.
Where to Play Poker Online in SA
SA players can access video poker at most online casinos (Springbok, Europa, Thunderbolt). For multiplayer poker, international platforms like PokerStars and 888poker accept SA players. Live dealer casino poker is available at Betway and other major operators with Evolution Gaming tables.
