Game Overview
Legacy of Dead is Play'n GO's worthy sequel to the legendary Book of Dead, one of the most-played slots in online casino history. It retains the beloved Egyptian theme and book scatter mechanic while introducing enhanced expanding symbol features during free spins that create substantially higher win potential than its predecessor.
The game plays on a 5×3 grid with 10 fixed paylines — identical to Book of Dead's structure. Visually, Legacy of Dead offers refined graphics with richer colour palettes and smoother animations, though the overall aesthetic stays true to the ancient Egyptian tomb-exploration theme that made the original so popular. The pharaoh remains the highest-paying regular symbol, while the book acts as both wild and scatter.
For SA players familiar with Book of Dead, Legacy of Dead delivers the same satisfying gameplay loop with meaningfully improved bonus mechanics. The 96.58% RTP is slightly higher than Book of Dead's 96.21%, and the stacked expanding symbol system creates more opportunities for screen-filling wins during free spins.
Expanding Symbols Mechanic
Multiple Expanding Symbols
Unlike Book of Dead's single expanding symbol, Legacy of Dead can stack multiple expanding symbols for full-screen wins up to 5,000x.
During free spins, a random symbol is chosen to expand and fill entire reels when enough instances appear. The key innovation over Book of Dead is that Legacy of Dead can stack multiple expanding symbols simultaneously. If you retrigger free spins, additional symbols are chosen to expand alongside existing ones. This dramatically increases the potential for full-screen wins where every position on the 5×3 grid shows the same expanding symbol.
The mathematical impact is significant: while Book of Dead's single expanding symbol creates wins across covered paylines, Legacy of Dead's multiple expanding symbols can produce wins across all 10 paylines simultaneously with the highest-paying symbol, driving the maximum win to 5,000x stake.
Pros
- Stacked expanding symbols covering full reels
- Up to 100 free spins possible via retriggers
- 96.58% RTP — higher than Book of Dead
- Stunning refined Egyptian visuals and animations
- Low minimum bet friendly — from R1 per spin
- Proven Play'n GO book mechanic
Cons
- High volatility — long dry spells between big wins
- Max win of 5,000x is modest by modern standards
- Simple base game mechanics — lacks innovation outside bonus
- No bonus buy option available
- 10 paylines only — fewer than many modern slots
Free Spins Breakdown
Land 3 or more book scatter symbols anywhere on the reels to trigger 10 free spins. Before free spins begin, a random symbol is selected as the expanding special symbol. During free spins, whenever enough instances of this symbol appear on a spin, they expand to fill their entire reels before payline evaluation.
Landing 3+ additional scatters during free spins awards 10 more spins and selects another symbol to expand. This retrigger can occur multiple times, accumulating up to 100 total free spins with multiple expanding symbols active simultaneously. The compounding effect of multiple expanding symbols is where Legacy of Dead's biggest wins materialise.
