Bonanza Megaways Slot Review

Game Overview

Bonanza Megaways from Big Time Gaming is the slot that launched the Megaways revolution — the single most influential mechanic in modern slot history. Released in 2017, it pioneered the variable reel mechanic that has since been licensed to dozens of providers and appears in hundreds of games. Nearly a decade later, Bonanza remains not just relevant but essential playing.

The mining theme places you in a gold mine with a railway cart running above the 6-reel grid. Each reel displays 2–7 symbols per spin, creating between 64 and 117,649 ways to win on every single spin. The dynamic grid size creates genuine unpredictability — you never know how many ways you'll have until the reels stop.

Reactions — Cascading Wins

Every winning combination triggers a Reaction — winning symbols explode and new symbols cascade in from above. This continues until no new wins form. A single spin can produce multiple consecutive wins through Reactions, and in the free spins round, each Reaction increases the multiplier by 1x with no limit.

The extra top reel (the minecart rail above reels 2-5) adds 4 additional symbol positions that contribute to winning combinations. This extra reel is unique to Bonanza and adds strategic depth — symbols here connect with the main grid to form wins across an expanded playing area.

Free Spins — The Unlimited Multiplier

Spell G-O-L-D across the extra reel to trigger 12 free spins. This is where Bonanza becomes legendary. Every Reaction during free spins increases the win multiplier by 1x — and there is no upper limit. The multiplier persists for the entire round, growing with every consecutive cascade.

Additional scatters during free spins award +5 spins each. Extended free spin sessions with high multipliers can produce extraordinary results. Sessions reaching 20x-50x multipliers are uncommon but achievable, and the theoretical maximum extends into life-changing territory.

The unlimited multiplier mechanic is what separates Bonanza from its countless imitators. While many Megaways slots cap their multipliers at 10x or 15x, Bonanza's uncapped progression creates genuine open-ended excitement during every free spin session.

Why Bonanza Still Matters in 2026

Nearly a decade after release, Bonanza consistently ranks in the top 50 most-played online slots globally. The mechanics hold up perfectly — the Megaways engine, Reactions, and unlimited multiplier create a gameplay loop that newer slots struggle to improve upon. The 96% RTP is competitive, and the mining theme remains charming despite simpler graphics compared to 2026 releases. For SA players discovering Megaways slots, starting with Bonanza provides the purest expression of the mechanic that changed the industry.

Our Verdict

Bonanza Megaways is the slot that changed everything. The unlimited multiplier during free spins creates genuinely open-ended excitement that newer Megaways slots haven't surpassed. The Reactions mechanic, variable ways engine, and extra top reel deliver a complete gameplay experience. If you've never played Bonanza, it's the most important single slot in modern online casino history. If you have played it, you already know why it's still essential. Rating: 4.5/5.
