Full Explanation
A sharp bettor (or sharp) is a knowledgeable, professional bettor whose wagers are respected by bookmakers because they consistently find value and win over the long term. Sharps use statistical models, proprietary data, and deep sport knowledge to identify mispriced odds. When sharps bet, bookmakers often move their lines, as sharp money is considered 'smart money.' The opposite of a sharp is a 'square' (recreational bettor). South African sharps often specialise in PSL, local rugby, or cricket where they may have superior information compared to international bookmakers. Some sportsbooks limit or ban sharp bettors.
💡 Example
A sharp bettor finds Chiefs at 3.50 when his model says fair price is 2.80 — he bets immediately.
